The Karl Lagerfeld

An opulent Cotai escape designed by a fashion icon
VERIFIED LUXURY

In a city packed with luxurious resorts, The Karl Lagerfeld hotel took the opulence to new heights when it opened in December 2021. Set within Grand Lisboa Palace Resort in Macau’s buzzing Cotai district, the 271-room tower is the world’s only hotel entirely designed by the late fashion legend. Lagerfeld’s creative flourishes run through every inch of the property, including a stunning art-filled lobby, a kaleidoscopic library, rock-star-worthy guest rooms and a seamless blend of chinoiserie and Western art deco.

While some design references, like custom headboards inspired by the hats worn by Ming Dynasty officials, date back centuries, the experience embodies modern luxury with amenities such as 500-thread-count cotton sheets, eight pillow choices, sophisticated Grohe shower systems and Cochine toiletries. Be sure to take advantage of the hotel’s location in the sprawling Grand Lisboa Palace Resort. Here you’ll find everything from fine dining and manicured green space to 100-plus boutiques housing the likes of Piaget, Balenciaga and, naturally, Karl Lagerfeld’s namesake brand.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • It’s impossible to overlook Lagerfeld’s attention to detail. The late designer personally conceived or selected every feature, pattern and material in the guest rooms. Imagine circular room dividers that recall the moon gates found in Chinese courtyard residences, porcelain vases handmade in Jingdezhen, custom vibrant cherry blossom wallpaper and more.
  • For a city hotel, the 271 accommodations are massive, starting from the 645-square-foot Klassik Rooms and stretching up to the 3,767-square-foot Autograph Suite. This latter hideaway is as grand as you’d expect, filled with a study room rich with dark woods, exclusive MOOD by Christofle flatware, a walk-in closet, a private massage room and even a media room with a karaoke entertainment system.
  • Lagerfeld was a voracious reader, and The Book Lounge pays homage to one of his favorite hobbies. The 3,885-square-foot space houses 4,000 personally curated books, many of which are rare, antique or collectible. It’s a unique spin on a tearoom that embodies French savoir-vivre, and it makes for a beautiful place to while away an afternoon over exclusive tea blends and bites like the truffle croque monsieur.
  • We love that The Spa, tucked away on the hotel's third floor, veers from conventions with moody dark and golden tones throughout the six treatment rooms. In this immaculate sanctuary, feel the stress melt away with a facial or massage featuring products from the popular London skincare brand 111SKIN.
  • Visit Mesa, the hotel’s contemporary Portuguese restaurant, to sample petiscos (or small plates) of deep-fried codfish with salmon roe, flavorful main dishes like free-range piri piri chicken or roasted octopus with potato cream and garlic, and Portuguese wines.

The Design

  • Throughout the Macau hotel, pops of art speak to Lagerfeld’s distinct style and vision. This becomes clear as soon as you enter the lobby and find a wall covered with more than 1,000 keys — a nod to the Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
  • Look for standout commissioned artworks, like the cotton crocheted sculpture by Dutch artist Marcel Wanders outside The Book Lounge and the gold orbs suspended above the lobby lift cars created by sculptor Jean-Michel Othoniel.
  • Mesa represents Macau’s rich culture in a way only Lagerfeld could achieve. The setting marries art deco with Chinese imperial motifs, from smooth marble and black-and-gold interiors to the statement cocktail bar inspired by a Chinese bird cage.
  • Even the two temperature-controlled swimming pools upend expectations. The indoor pool boasts oversized scalloped stone columns, while the outdoor pool lets you soak up the sun in a cabana overlooking the resort’s French podium gardens.
